Climate change significantly affects coffee quality, impacting everything from flavor and aroma to bean size and chemical composition. Drought conditions can stress plants, leading to smaller beans and poor development. Coffee grown at higher temperatures tends to ripen faster, reducing the time beans need to develop complex flavors. Climate induced heat stress causes flower abortion from coffee trees, reducing yields. Furthermore, climate change also causes outbreak of pests and diseases affecting coffee quality and yields.
The primary cause is the increase in greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, in the atmosphere. These gases trap heat, leading to global warming and climate disruption.
Smallholders can adapt and survive through a combination of practical strategies, local knowledge, and external support, adopting farming methods that are resilient, sustainable, and adaptive like agro-foresrty, cover cropping and mulching, drought resistant crop varieties, employing water conservation technologies like rain water harvesting, irrigation, climate finance and insurance, farmer trainings and education on climate adaptation, farmer group formation for strong markert connections.
At Ngite Space, we educate others about climate action, support policies for renewable energy, reducing emissions, promoting and training on cleaner production technologies, supporting and collaborating with other climate-focused organizations. Our advocacy strategy strives to hold cocoa and coffee value chain actors and government accountable for enviromnetal protection.
